Brazil's Greatest Celebration

Five days of rhythm, feathers, and joy that transform the streets of Brazil into the biggest party on Earth - where samba echoes through the night and millions dance as one.

A 4-Page Visual Journey

Slide 02 - Origins

Roots of the Celebration

Brazilian Carnival is a living tapestry woven from Indigenous traditions, African heritage, and European festivity. What began as a pre-Lenten indulgence has become the world's most spectacular street festival.

17th Century

Colonial Entrudo

Portuguese settlers brought "Entrudo" - a chaotic water-and-flour street fight marking the days before Lent. Everyone participated, regardless of social class.

Late 1800s

African Rhythms Arrive

Enslaved Africans and their descendants infused Carnival with samba, percussion, and spiritual traditions, transforming the celebration with deep musical roots.

1928

First Samba School

Deixa Falar, the first samba school, was founded in Rio. It formalized the parade structure and competitive spirit that defines modern Carnival.

1984

The Sambódromo

Oscar Niemeyer designed the Sambódromo in Rio, giving samba schools a dedicated 700-meter runway for their spectacular parades.

Traditions That Define Carnival

Samba Schools

Over 200 samba schools in Rio alone, each representing a neighborhood. They spend the entire year preparing elaborate floats, costumes, and original samba songs for the grand parade competition.

Blocos & Street Parties

Free, open-air street parties called "blocos" erupt across every city. Some draw millions - like Bloco da Preta in São Paulo - with brass bands, drinking, and dancing until dawn.

Costumes & Fantasias

Elaborate feathered costumes, or "fantasias," can cost thousands of dollars and weigh over 30 pounds. Each samba school designs hundreds of matching outfits around a yearly theme, creating a river of color down the parade runway.

Food, Drink & Frevo

Street food fuels the party: feijoada, acarajé, and endless caipirinhas. In Recife and Olinda, the energetic frevo dance - with its spinning umbrellas - rivals samba as the region's signature beat.

The Sambódromo Parade

Each samba school has 65-80 minutes to parade down the 700-meter Sambódromo runway with up to 5,000 dancers, musicians, and performers. A panel of judges scores them on percussion, harmony, floats, costumes, and the year's chosen theme - determining promotion and relegation.
